ROCHESTER — Rian Carter led Mohawk Valley Community College to a first-round victory in the annual Murph Shapiro Classic on Saturday.

Carter scored 21 points to lead three players in double figures as the Hawks defeated Jamestown CC, 70-56.

The Jayhawks (2-3) will meet Cecil CC of Maryland this afternoon as they try to even their record. 

Jamestown CC fell behind Mohawk Valley by 10 points in the first half, but cut the deficit to 34-30 by halftime. The Jayhawks got within four points in the second half, but Mohawk Valley increased the lead once again and held a double-figure lead the rest of the way.

D.J. Branch led the Jayhawks with 16 points and Germaine Wright contributed nine. 

Jamestown CC shot 37 percent from the field while Mohawk Valley CC connected on 51 percent of its attempts.

Jordan Coleson had 12 points and Donte Cumpler 10 points in the victory.
