ROCHESTER — Jamestown Community College salvaged a 1-1 weekend with a 73-64 victory over Cecil College on the second day of the fifth annual Murph Shapiro Classic on Sunday at Monroe CC.

The Jayhawks led by three at halftime and held on in the second half thanks to 21-of-26 shooting from the foul line.

"They got after us. When they start fouling, it's a hard thing to stop,"Jamestown CC coach George Sisson said. "Fortunately for us, we shot 76 percent from the foul line with some decent 3-point shooting. We handled that physicality in the second half, took care of the ball and made foul shots."

D.J. Branch led Jamestown CC with 18 points and three assists while Kenny Pitt added 11 points and six rebounds. Williams Overo chipped in 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Keshaun Howard blocked two shots in the win.

Jordan Griggs led the Seahawks with 12 points and Greg Alexander added 10.

Cecil College (1-4, 0-0) tied the game on a foul shot with six seconds left in the first half, but Howard threw a long inbounds pass to Branch, who converted a three-point play at the other end of the floor with a second left in the opening 20 minutes to give the Jayhawks the lead for good.

Jamestown CC (3-3, 0-1) needed just eight field goals, including two Branch 3-pointers, to hold on over the final 40 minutes thanks to its work from the charity stripe.

Mohawk Valley CC beat the Tribunes in Sunday's second game.

"We changed the starting lineup, which didn't really get us off to a quicker start, but defensively in the first couple of games whenever we had a poor offensive possession, it carried over to defense," Sisson said. "When you give up 70 or less you should win. … We are slowly getting a little bit better defensively.

The Jayhawks will return to Region 3 Division II play Wednesday at Erie CC.

Cecil College is a Division II program that plays in Region 20.
