ROCHESTER — The Jamestown Community College men's basketball team is advancing to the NJCAA Region 3 Division II final four.

Tyairus Sands scored 21 points; Jared Fish added 18, including a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line, and grabbed eight rebounds; and Marcus Heard chipped in 16 points as the sixth-seeded Jayhawks upset No. 3 Monroe CC, 80-74, in a quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

The victory raised Jamestown CC's record to 12-14 and into the semifinals against No. 2 Niagara County CC (23-7) on Saturday at the Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.

The Jayhawks, who lost to the Tribunes (14-13), 75-63, last Saturday in the same venue, still won two of three meetings with their rivals this season, and have extended their season at least through Saturday.

The way Jamestown CC played last night, anything is possible.

In addition to Sands, Fish and Heard, interim head coach Xavier Churnac received contributions from a host of players. Trayon Rumley scored 8 points and had 7 rebounds; Donathan Daniels had 5 points and nine boards; and Nate Pelissier added 7 points.

As a team, the Jayhawks shot 46 percent from the floor (25 of 54), 81 percent from the foul line (25 of 31) and held a 37-36 rebounding edge.

Majesty Brandon led all scorers with 35 points, Gilberto Cue had 14 and Omari Brown added 12, but the hosts shot just 41 percent (27 of 66) from the floor.

In other quarterfinal action last night, No. 4 Genesee CC defeated No. 5 Mercyhurst North East, 71-59. Genesee CC (15-13) will take on No. 1 Erie CC (22-3) in the other semifinal, scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
