BUFFALO, NY - You can't ask for much more than perfection, and that is exactly what the Jamestown Community College (JCC) men's and women's swimming and diving teams accomplished in conference play, capturing both championships with undefeated seasons. The unblemished records were finished off Wednesday night at the WNYAC meet hosted by Erie Community College, where the Jayhawks topped the home Kats and Genesee Community College.
"Sweeping the WNYAC on both sides is something that we had not accomplished in our program history. It definitely is one of our first goals to win the WNYAC titles each year," said head coach Todd Conklin.
On the ladies' side, this is back-to-back league titles and the third overall. The Jayhawk women jumped out to an early lead, capturing the 200-yard medley relay behind the team of Roxanne Lothian, Katrina DeGroff, Desiree Putt, and Emily Swan.
JCC followed that up by taking the top three spots in the 1650 free, with Addison Lawson winning, Sophia Gervasio second, and Cassie Lyon third.
Lothian and Swan were back in the pool for the 200 free, where they finished first and second, respectively.
Jamestown grabbed first and third in the 50 free, with Putt winning by over half a second, and Willow Chase in third.
In the 200 individual medley, Gervasio brought home a second place, and Degroff came in third.
Chase was dominant in the 100 butterfly, not just winning but doing so by seven seconds.
Swan captured another first in the 100 free, with teammates Cassie Lyon and Addison Lawson touching in third and fifth, respectively.
Putt and Gervasio came in second and third in the 100 backstroke.
It was another first, second, and third for the Jayhawks in the 500 free. Freshman Roxy Lothian was on top, with Lyon and Chase just behind.
Lastly, for the ladies, Degroff swam the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, with Lawson coming in second.
"Heading into regionals, I think we've had a lot of successful swims since we've been back in the second semester. We're ready to ramp it up and try to capture our second straight regional title and our first on the men's side since the Covid year. The regional title is goal number two, and I feel the kids are motivated and excited for next weekend," added Conklin.
Speaking of the men, Cameron Milewski continued his torrid pace in the diving well, winning the 3-meter event with a score of 192.37 just one day after setting three new JCC program records.
In the 50 free, Daniel Peterson set a blistering pace, winning by over a second.
Zach Johnson won the 200 free by almost ten seconds, with Christian Merrill grabbing third.
It was another third for JCC in the 1650 free as Samuel Hersom cut 17 seconds off of his qualifying time. Hersom also finished fourth in the 100 butterfly.
Peterson and Milewski continued their all-JCC battles, with Peterson winning the 100 free and Milewski earning second.
Christian Merrill joined the action in the 100 backstroke, where he took second, and the 200 individual medley, where he finished third.
Diego Villarroel just topped Merrill in the 200 IM, grabbing second; the freshman was also third in the 100 breaststroke.
The last event for the guys was the 800 free relay. An event won by the Jayhawks' team of Hersom, Villarroel, Johnson, and Peterson.
JCC now shifts its focus to the postseason, with regional and national championships on the horizon.
"The coaches couldn't be more proud of the hard work our student-athletes have been putting in. We have broken a few records through the year, but I feel our best is yet to come. We all know that this next month truly is the month to focus in on all the final details and prepare for what's in front of us. The championship meets are the ultimate prize coming the first week of March, where we will look to win another national title," said Conklin.
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship takes place in Fort Pierce, FL, during the first week of March. Before the Jayhawks focus on these events, they have the Region 3 championship hosted by Erie Community College from February 13th to the 15th.
