Jayhawks Cruise to a 71-38 win over Corning

OLEAN - Getting back in the win column, the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team dominated fellow Region 3 member Corning Community College, getting a convincing 71-38 win Tuesday evening at the Olean YMCA.

 

The Jayhawks (6-5) had five players score in double-digits with guard Destiny Evans (Peoria, IL/Lorain HS) leading the way with 18 points off the bench. Guard Lauren Alfa (Mayville, NYChautauqua Lake Central) had a career-night, dropping 14 points with Kymi Nance (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) chipping in with 13 points.

 

Forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights) had a game-high 15 rebounds (2 offense, 13 defense) while Evans finished with 11 rebounds (4 offense, 7 defense). Hicks also caused trouble for the Red Barons' offense, rejecting five shot attempts.

 

JCC came out firing on all cylinders, going up 11-4 in the first five minutes of action thanks to a pair of baskets from guard Zalika Stevens (Ajax, Ontario, Canada/Thornlea Secondary School) and a three-pointer from Alfa. 

 

Early in the second quarter, the Jayhawks pushed their lead to nine with a pair of free throws from D'Auzhanay Harden (Erie, PA/Erie HS) to make it 19-10. Corning quickly made it a six-point game with Destiny Hammond making the first of two free throw attempts to make it 19-13 at the 9:19 mark.

 

JCC quickly made it a 12-point game, going on a 6-0 run with baskets from Evans, Stevens and guard Jessica Beehler (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk HS) to make it 25-13.

 

The Red Barons did claw back into the game late in the quarter, cutting the deficit to five points after scoring seven unanswered points to make it a 25-20 ball game. JCC quickly got back to their game, getting their biggest lead of 13 points with a basket from Evans as they would take a 36-23 lead into the half.

 

The Jayhawks continued to show their dominance on the offensive and defensive end of the court, outscoring Corning 35-15 in the second half.

 

JCC went 32-for-70 (45.7 percent) from the field with the Red Barons going 12-for-66 (18.2 percent) from the floor. The Jayhawks asserted their dominance in the paint, scoring 52 points to Corning's 16 points.

 

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Thursday, December 9th, as they travel to Buffalo to take on Villa Maria College at 5:30 p.m.
