JAMESTOWN, NY - For the second straight year the Jamestown Community College (JCC) baseball team came up just short of an upset of highly ranked SUNY Niagara; this time around it was a 5-4 home loss in extra innings that stung the Jayhawks.
It was a back-and-forth affair between the Region 3 rivals, with Niagara grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top half of the 1st inning. JCC answered in the bottom, with a solo home run blast from sophomore Santino Musone to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. That score held until the 4th, where Seth Ranieri sent a sacrifice fly to the outfield, deep enough to allow Luke Larson to score for a 2-2 ball game. Niagara reclaimed a two-run advantage in the 6th before the Jayhawks once again battled back on another homer, this time from freshman Tyler Skura, who sent a two-run shot to right center for a tie game at 4-4. That score held to the top of the 8th, where Niagara was able to double home the game-winning run for a 5-4 final in extra innings.
Game two didn't go quite as well for the Jayhawks. Niagara was able to score a run in the 2nd and 3rd for a 2-0 lead. Jamestown couldn't push a run across, trailing 2-0 going into the 5th inning. In the 5th, the Thunderwolves broke it open by scoring three more runs for a 5-0 lead heading to their 6-0 defeat of JCC.
The pair of losses to the #3-ranked team in the nation sent JCC to 8-15 on the year, with a doubleheader at SUNY Niagara scheduled for Sunday.
