JAMESTOWN, NY - There may not be a men's soccer team in the country hotter than the Jamestown Community College Jayhawks. After knocking off #5 Herkimer College on Saturday, they turned around and tied the #2 in the nation, Finger Lakes Community College, at home on Wednesday.
A perfect way to send off head coach Pat Anderson, who was coaching in his final home game as the bench boss of the Jayhawks after 17 successful seasons.
You could feel from the beginning that this game was going to be a nail-biter, with both teams having long, sustained possession through a scoreless first 15 minutes.
Finger Lakes broke through first in the 16th minute; Finn Atkinson was able to beat Theo Merlin for a 1-0 game.
It took another 20 minutes before the Lakers once again found the back of the net, but the home team wasn't fazed.
JCC cut the deficit in half when defenseman Sam Little joined the rush and potted home a shot to score his first career goal in the green and gold.
The 2-1 score held until Ethyn Gilbert was pulled down in the box for a penalty kick. Sophomore Braidan Govan stepped in and blasted home the shot for a 2-2 tie.
Jamestown had a beautiful chance to steal a win late as Liam Doyle broke loose and smashed a one-on-one opportunity, but the Lakers' Harry Eastwick made a great save to preserve the tie.
JCC now sits at 10-5-1 on the year.
The Jayhawks finish Region 3 play on Sunday, October 19th, at 12:00 PM at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
