JAMESTOWN, NY - It's a season of NEW for the Jamestown Community College volleyball team as they replace their head coach and return just one sophomore from the 2023 squad that finished 8-14 and in the WNYAC (Western New York Athletic Conference) championship game.
"It's been really fun getting to know the girls. Getting to know their strengths and weaknesses. We're pretty excited about where we are at right now," said first-year head coach Scott Olson. "It's been going really well. I feel like change has been good. It is a reset. Everyone is getting along super well and improving a lot," said the lone returner, Aiyana Stracener. "We all individually have things to work on, and as a team, we have work to do. We need to keep putting in the work and not stopping," added the Sherman native.
For the seven members of the roster that are wearing green and gold for the first time, the newness has been something to bond over. "It was challenging at first, but now that it is our second week practicing, we have gotten into a groove," mentioned freshman Payton Lewis.
Despite all the fresh faces, the Jayhawks still have their sights set on the WNYACs and beyond. "We set a goal to get to regionals. After regionals, we'd love to get to nationals, but we know we have to work hard for it," added Lewis. "For me, it isn't about regionals or nationals or anything like that. We want to improve every day. We want our level of play to be as high as it can be and as consistent as it can be. If we do that, we know that the wins will come," said Olson.
The Jayhawks look to get their first win when they host Lakeland Community College on Tuesday, August 27th, at 6:00 PM.
