BATAVIA, NY - It was a day trip to remember for Jamestown Community College (JCC) volleyball and head coach Cherish Pope, who earned her first career win as bench boss for the Jayhawks.
The day at the Genesee POD didn't start off looking like JCC was going to have a happy bus ride home from Batavia, with Jamestown falling to the home Panthers 3-0, but the Jayhawks did push one of the better teams in Region 3 to a 26-24 second set, giving the ladies some confidence as they entered their second matchup, this one with SUNY Broome.
In the battle with Broome, Jamestown fell behind 2-0 before rallying. The Jayhawks won the third set 25-22 and the fourth 25-17 to set up a decisive fifth set.
JCC was able to secure the victory, 15-13, in a defensive battle.
"Naz (Nazariah Neal) was incredible on defense," said Coach Pope. "She kept us in the game a lot," she added.
That defense and grit from Jamestown led to Pope's first career victory and puts JCC at 1-1 in Region 3 action.
Next up for the Jayhawks is another regional POD as they visit Onondaga Community College to take on the home Lazers and Corning Community College.
