PERRYSBURG, Ohio – On day one of the Owens Invitational, No. 5 Jamestown Community College volleyball team found themselves against some tougher opponents, dropping both matches of the day.
In the first match of the day, the Jayhawks (1-2) fell to the College of DuPage in three straight sets. After falling 25-11 in the first set, JCC was able to settle in and keep the set close against the Chaparrals. In the second set, DuPage pulled out a 25-22 victory and another close win in the third set, winning 25-20.
The Jayhawks were led by freshman middle hitter Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) and freshman outside hitter Emma McCarthy (Olean, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) with four kills each. Freshman setter Madison Johnson (Panama, NY/Panama Central) had a team-high 11 assists and seven digs.
At the net, Claire Pumford had four total blocks with McCarthy adding two blocks.
Looking to bounce back in the second match of the day, JCC would face DII No. 7 Terra State.
The Titans got off to a fast start against the Jayhawks, winning the first set by a score of 25-8. JCC didn't back down though as they kept battling but fell in consecutive sets, 25-16 and 25-18.
Claire Pumford and freshman outside hitter Megan Cotter (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) each had a team-high five kills. Johnson added 16 assists to her daily total while finishing with a team-high seven digs. Maggie McClellian (Olean, NY/Olean HS) added five digs with Claire Pumford chipping in with four digs.
The Jayhawks will have a quick turnaround as they face DII Glen Oaks Community College and No. 1 Owens Community College tomorrow, September 4th. Action starts at 10 a.m.
