CORNING - Looking to get back in the win column, the Jamestown Community College volleyball battled a tough Corning Community College team but came away with a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Jayhawks (3-5) needed to extend the first set to come away with a 27-25 victory. JCC came back strong in the second set, getting the 25-18 win. The Red Barons did go away quietly, winning the third set, 25-21. JCC was able to close out the match, getting the 25-16 victory in the fourth set.
Freshman outside hitter Emma McCarthy (Olean, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central) led the offensive attack, having a team-high 11 kills with freshman middle hitter Claire Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) and freshman outside hitter Megan Cotter (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern High) finishing with nine kills each.
On the defensive side, Cotter and Claire Pumford had a team-high 17 digs each with freshman setter Madison Johnson (Panama, NY/Panama Central) chipping in with 13 digs.
Johnson facilitated the offense nicely, collecting 30 assists while Claire Pumford and sophomore right side Emma Pumford (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) combined for six blocks on the afternoon.
The Jayhawks will be back in action next Tuesday, September 21st, as they travel to Niagara County Community College for a 6 p.m. start.
