JCC Host Nearly 200 Wrestlers in Jayhawk Open; Hernandez Takes 6th

JAMESTOWN, NY - Jamestown Community College (JCC) hosted nearly 200 wrestlers from as far as Maryland for the Jayhawk Open on Sunday.

The event was stacked with high-level competition, including student-athletes from major Division One and Division Two programs.

JCC entered all five of its wrestlers in the tournament, as well as three Jayhawks who wrestled with JCC but were unattached members of the program.

Christian Hernandez was the best performer for JCC, finishing sixth at 174 pounds. The freshman won his opening match by a pin at :31 of the first round. He dropped his next bout before winning a pair to earn his way to the 5th place match. Hernandez lost that battle to finish sixth.

Fellow freshman Brad Smth also won his opening match, an 8-4 decision to move to the quarterfinals, but he lost his next two bouts to finish 1-2 on the day in 165 pounds.

The other three Jayhawks, Ryan Parton, Gavin Warner, and Nicholas Ewan, all went 0-2.

Of the three unattached Jayhawks, Kyle Keefe was the only one to earn a win. He took third in the 185 class. The 2024 JCC national representative won his first two matches before losing to eventual champ Luke Ciampa. Keefe bounced back to earn a spot in the third place bout, where he won by tech fall 16-1.

JCC now shifts its attention to February, where they travel to the Whizzer Open hosted by Henry Ford Community College on Saturday, February 1st, at 10:00 AM.
