Phone: 619.987.8289

The Jamestown Community College wrestling team has been guided by head coach Brian Dowdall since his hire in April of 2023. In his two seasons with the Jayhawks, he sent four participants to the NJCAA national championships and had several podiums wreslters througout his Jayhawk tenure.

Leading JCC is the latest in a long coaching history for Dowdall. He was an assistant for SUNY Niagara during the 2000-2001 season. From there, he assisted the University at Buffalo for ten seasons. Coach Dowdall's guidance isn't limited to collegiate wrestling. He also spent a decade leading a club team in the New York Super Six in Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle. During those tenures, he coached several student-athletes who earned All-American status.

"I believe there are three facets to wrestling: toughness, work ethic, and technique. Toughness is difficult to coach but we strive to inspire the wrestlers to reach new levels there. I think it's important that the wrestlers understand that working beyond their comfort zone will provide confidence in everything they do. Solid technique is the most tangible and teachable facet. I am very analytical and focus on minor details that can have profound impacts on execution," said Coach Dowdall.

His coaching career is an extension of a fantastic individual resume on the mat. During his high school days at Kenmore East, Brian placed 4th in Section 6 before moving on to wrestle at SUNY Niagara, where he was an All-American, finishing 8th in the nation in the 118lb division. After Niagara, he transferred to the University at Buffalo and earned 3rd in the New York State Collegiate tournament at 118lbs and 4th in the national qualifier at 126lbs. Outside of college, Coach Dowdall won the Freestyle Empire State Games in 1999, in 1996 he finished 3rd in the Eastern Regional Olympic Trials and was a semifinalist in the 2000 Northeast Regional Olympic qualifier.

Coach graduated from SUNY Niagara with a degree in Liberal Arts - Math Science. He holds a degree in Mathematics from the University at Buffalo.

When coach Dowdall isn't in the gym with his Jayhawks, he enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids. The Dowdalls live in Busti, NY. Brian currently works as a Healthcare Actuary for Evolent.

From wrestling to coaching to family, Dowdall is a well-rounded father and mentor. He believes those attributes are what he looks for in future Jayhawks. "We’re looking to make the wrestlers as good of a person and student-athlete as they can be. Make them the best version of themselves," added Dowdall.
